Part 2: Practical Approaches & Standard Operating Procedures
Where to Go and What to Say:
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15.
In Part 1, we covered the heart and attitude of evangelism. Now let’s get practical about WHERE to reach people and HOW to engage them effectively.
Approaching People in Different Settings
DO: Approaching People on the Street or Roadside
When meeting people walking or standing by the road:
-
Make eye contact and smile before speaking
-
Start with a simple greeting: “Good morning/afternoon, how are you today?”
-
Ask permission: “Do you have a moment to chat?”
-
Be aware of their pace, if they’re walking quickly, they may be in a hurry
-
Walk with them briefly if they’re heading somewhere, but don’t follow if they seem uncomfortable
-
Step aside to a safe spot where you’re not blocking foot traffic
-
Be mindful of safety, stay in well-lit, public areas with your team nearby
DO: Approaching People in Neighborhoods
When going door-to-door or through residential areas:
-
Look approachable and peaceful – your demeanor sets the tone
-
Respect people’s property – don’t walk on lawns or block driveways
-
Observe signs of privacy – if someone is behind a closed gate or has a “no trespassing” sign, move on
-
Greet from a distance first: “Hello! I’m (Your Name) from Scripture City Church here in Abuja. Do you have a moment?”
-
Step back to give them personal space
-
Be brief and kind even if they decline
-
Leave something friendly , our tract or church flyer on the table or by the door if no one answers
-
Never linger if someone seems uncomfortable or asks you to leave
“Let your moderation be known unto all men.” Philippians 4:5.
DO: Approach People in Shops Respectfully
When entering shops:
-
Greet the shop owner first
-
Ask if they have a moment to chat
-
Be mindful of customers waiting to be served
-
If they’re busy, offer a tract and leave
-
Never block the entrance or disturb business
-
Make a small purchase if appropriate – it opens doors!
“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6.
If they say they’re busy, respect that. Forcing a conversation when customers are waiting creates a bad testimony. Leave gracefully and pray for them later.
DON’T: Be Intrusive or Pushy
-
Don’t block someone’s path
-
Don’t follow someone who walks away
-
Don’t raise your voice or call after people
-
Don’t enter gates or yards without permission
-
Don’t keep talking if someone clearly wants to end the conversation
-
Don’t take it personally when people decline, the seed is planted
“And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.” Matthew 10:14.
